Amount Awarded: £46,384
As a direct response to the impact of Covid-19 Macmillan Jersey launched a new community support service to provide home visits to people with cancer and their families.
This new service will enable Macmillan Jersey to provide emotional support and practical advice to cancer patients (and their families) who are still shielding due to being on treatment, recently completed treatment or recovering from surgery, or those who are in the high-risk category. This service will be offered to people in gardens/outdoor space where possible or inside people’s homes. The service will also provide outreach support to other community providers such as Jersey Hospice Care and nursing homes. Covid-19 guidelines will be followed when supporting people in the community home visits.
Evidence is now emerging that the impact of delayed diagnosis and treatment and reduced access to services, including psychological support, is resulting in increased depression and anxiety rates, which is known to directly correlate to reduced mental health and mortality.
As a result of Covid-19, Macmillan Jersey immediately adapted its services to ensure anyone affected by cancer in Jersey had access to their services via phone. In addition to this, they also offered virtual support sessions and wellbeing classes (yoga, relaxation and exercise). On average they have been providing 200 support sessions per month by phone.
Depending on the outcomes/impact of this service the charity will consider making this a permanent service offering, subject to other strategic decisions relating to their resources and premises.
The service is available Monday to Friday between 10am and 4pm.
The service is aimed at people who:
1) Are currently on treatment
2) Recently completed treatment or recovering from surgery
3) Are in the high-risk category
