Donor Advised Funds

The Jersey Community Foundation works closely with successful individuals that wish to achieve high impact philanthropic outcomes without the need to set up their own charitable infrastructure.

We do this through Donor Advised Funds or our Themed Funds that nest within the Foundation’s infrastructure allowing donors all of the benefits of our expertise, systems and professionalism without compromising on oversight and control. Crucially, as the Jersey Community Foundation is a charity all of this can be achieved safe in the knowledge that no wealth is wasted. In order to launch a DAF, a minimum donation amount will apply.

More Information

  • You make a donation to your fund which is immediately available for awarding grants to local projects. Our team will work with you to understand your passion and aims, and will then put forward grant applications for your consideration on a regular basis. Flow-through funds are usually topped up annually, and a contribution to the Community Foundation applies.

  • A capital sum is invested into an endowment, and the income generated provides grant making funds throughout the year, minus a contribution to the Community Foundation’s time. Funds can be established as a one-off donation or built over a number of years. Endowments provide a fantastic long-term investment, allowing donors to continue giving for years to come.

    • A tried and tested ‘out of the box’ solution that is completely customisable to your philanthropic ambitions

    • Access to the Foundation's extensive knowledge of the charitable sector, allowing ability to connect donors with organisations working within their areas of interest

    • Low cost allowing more wealth to be applied to charitable ends

    • Regular local needs assessment research, providing evidence-based data and insight into the local needs

    • Rapid deployment

    • Flexible - Instead of being tied to one or more charities donors can pivot their giving to the areas of greatest need over the long term

    • Monitoring and impact measurement enabling a feedback loop that informs giving to drive more effective philanthropic outcomes

    • Scope to dictate the level of involvement in and influence over the Fund

    • Capacity building of charities through the application of Jersey Community Foundation standards

    • Bespoke reporting and engagement with grant recipients in line with donors’ preferences

    • Pro-active & responsive approach in addressing the current needs of the islands

    • Opportunity to co-create programmes and work with other donors with similar interests

  • We approach all Donor Advised Funds as partnerships between us and the successful individuals with whom we set them up. We work closely with the donors during the establishment, management and evaluation phases of the Funds over the long term. The following steps are followed to ensure alignment:

    • We work with donors to establish their charitable aims and areas of interest whilst allowing them to benefit from our unique and in-depth knowledge of local needs. It’s crucial for us to understand the outcomes donors wish to achieve from their philanthropy;

    • We agree the exact nature of the involvement donors would like to play in the management and direction of their Fund. It’s also important for us to know whether donors wish to be publicly associated with their Fund or remain anonymous;

    • We will establish the Fund which will be named by the donor;

    • Utilising our unique position as the only Community Foundation in Jersey we will solicit relevant grant applications from charities and foundations;

    • Grant applications will be received and due diligence checks carried out;

    • Applications will be subjected to our stringent evaluation methodology designed to assess need, suitability and practicability;

    • On a regular basis applications can be shared and analysed with the donor and grant awards decisions will be made;

    • Grants will be distributed;

    • Grants will then be tracked to ensure the funds are used for the intended purposes;

    • Outcomes will be evaluated to guide the Foundation's future grant award decisions.

  • Themed Funds are an alternative option to Donor Advised Funds, supported by one-off regular gifts from several donors who share a common interest, such as Mental Health, Sport, The Arts or The Environment.

    Donors chose to support Themed Funds because they trust the Foundation's expertise in knowing where the funds will have the greatest impact. Collectively, these funds allow the Foundation to respond to current community needs and to emerging opportunities for projects, programs, and services across a broad range of charitable organisations.

    Themed funds

  • High impact philanthropy can only be achieved with a thorough understanding of need. Too often wealth is directed towards well established or well-known charities rather than to where the greatest community need is. At Jersey Community Foundation, we have a unique and in-depth understanding of local needs arising from:

    • A comprehensive island wide needs analysis that is maintained dynamically

    • Our unique oversight position that enables us to understand and evaluate a wide range of island charities and initiatives

    • A successful track record of assessing the impact of grants

    • Building a strong story around the impact of grants
